Monthly vs annual AI plans: when paying yearly is worth it
Almost every AI tool offers a discount for paying a year in advance, and pricing pages often show the annual "per month" figure first. The discount is real, but it only pays off if you keep using the tool for most of the year. This guide shows how big the discounts are on a few popular plans, how to work out the break-even point, and how to decide.
How big are annual discounts?
These examples come from the official pricing pages, checked on November 7, 2026:
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20 / month | $200 / year ($17 / month) | about 17% |
| Midjourney Standard | $30 / month | $288 / year ($24 / month) | 20% |
| Runway Standard | $15 / month | $12 / month billed yearly | 20% |
| Pika Starter | $10 / month | $8 / month billed yearly | 20% |
| Luma Plus | $30 / month | $300 / year ($25 / month) | about 17% |
| Ollama Pro | $20 / month | $200 / year | about 17% |
| Udio Standard | $10 / month | $96 / year ($8 / month) | 20% |
A common pattern is "two months free": you pay for ten months and get twelve, which is a saving of about 17%. A 20% discount is roughly two and a half months free. Current prices for every plan are on the price list.
The break-even point
The question to ask is not "how much do I save?" but "how many months do I need to keep using this for the annual plan to cost less than paying monthly?" The answer is simple:
break-even months = annual price ÷ monthly price
For Claude Pro, $200 ÷ $20 = 10 months. If you would still be paying for it monthly after ten months, the annual plan is cheaper. If there is a real chance you will stop within ten months, monthly billing costs less overall, because you can cancel at any point.
For a 20% discount such as Midjourney's, $288 ÷ $30 = 9.6 months. The bigger the discount, the earlier the break-even point, but for most AI plans it lands between nine and ten months.
Why AI tools are a special case
For something like cloud storage, committing for a year is easy: your needs rarely change. AI tools are different in a few ways that make monthly billing more attractive than the discount suggests.
- Plans change quickly. In the plans we track, several services renamed or replaced their tiers within the past year. Cursor now sells Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra tiers; Google's Ultra plan is now offered at $99.99 and $199.99 instead of one higher price. An annual plan can leave you on a tier that no longer matches the lineup.
- Competitors catch up. The tool that is clearly best this month may not be in six months. Monthly billing keeps switching cheap.
- Usage is uneven. Many people use an image or video generator heavily for a project and then barely at all. Paying monthly during busy periods and pausing in between can cost less than a year up front.
- Exchange rates move. If you pay in won, an annual charge locks in the exchange rate on one day. That can work for you or against you, but it is one large charge rather than twelve smaller ones.
When annual billing makes sense
- You have used the tool every month for at least three or four months and expect to keep doing so.
- It is part of your work, so stopping would cost you more than the subscription.
- The annual discount is large, for example 20% or more.
- You are comfortable with a single large payment and have checked the refund policy in case the tool changes.
When to stay monthly
- You are still comparing tools in the same category. See how to cut overlapping subscriptions.
- You use the tool for occasional projects rather than every week.
- The service has recently changed its plans or prices.
- You are on a trial or a promotional first month. Several services, including ElevenLabs and Synthesia, show a reduced first-month price before the regular monthly price applies.
Tracking an annual plan in Hms
The calculator works in monthly amounts, so an annual plan needs one small step. Either divide the yearly price by 12 and enter that as the plan's price, or keep the monthly list price and enter the annual saving as a discount. For Claude Pro on an annual plan, that means a price of $16.67, or the $20 list price with a 17% discount. The yearly total in the calculator will then match what you pay.
Set the billing day to the date your annual plan renews, too. The Remind button creates a monthly event, so for an annual plan you may prefer to edit the event in your calendar to repeat yearly instead.
